The Data Doesn’t Lie
When this Pinterest drama started last month, I was firmly in camp ‘this is a Pinterest algo update’ because I have so many Pinterest accounts of varying ages. I could see that not all accounts were hit.
And, Growth Cupid has managed/is managing Pinterest accounts for clients. So, I have a decent amount of data.
I was seeing newer accounts getting clapped for the most part.
Nic, the creator of Blog To Pin, has crunched the numbers of what he can see across his user data set and shared it on Twitter today.
Looks like it was definitely a change to their algo. I suspect to deal with the mass amount of people spamming them.
One of the more interesting things he noted is that 8.5% of accounts had a big drop(>50%, usually close to 95%). Almost total annihilation for those accounts seeing a 95% drop.
Nic also has a blog post with even more details and images. Like this one -
Well, that pretty much says it all, eh?
I think what will be interesting is how things go from here.
Will Pinterest start doing their own algo updates more often now? Did they bake something into the algo to sandbox new accounts going forward?
I’m still pinning, how about you?
