Quick announcement: the ghostwriter romance book I published will be free all day Saturday, Sunday and Monday (incase you missed downloading it). Find it on Amazon by searching for author Lexi Shea and book Hockey Hayride.

If you’re new here, a recent request was on doing an agency pivot from niche sites.

Here’s where to find Part 1 and Part 2.

Today I’ll share a bit about how I get clients.

More on that in a moment.

But first, I’ve got a sponsor today. So, check ‘em out!

Leads are everywhere…

My Skipblast blog has been the source of most of my SEO consulting and agency work, especially in the beginning.

I’ve also gotten a few leads from leaving comments on blog posts.

I once even got a lead via one of my affiliate sites because I was ranking higher than the brand itself.

So, I was hired to do their SEO.

But through my Skipblast blog, I’ve built a reputation that’s gotten me on a lot of podcasts and livestreams - and this has been very beneficial for me as social proof that I know what I’m doing.

In fact, just this week I was talking with a potential local SEO client who told me that he’d Googled me and it was clear I know what I’m doing.

I’ve also done cold emailing with success just in recent months. This is how a lot of agencies get clients. (HUGE learning curve to get this right)

And though I haven’t gotten any leads from it yet, I started writing on Medium as a way to “be everywhere” and promote my brand. Though I’ve been neglecting that lately.

I’ve also got a huge list of YouTube videos that I intend to record that are all going to serve as a discovery source for potential leads.

For me personally, where I’m at right now is that until this year, I’ve never really had to do much marketing of my agency because I am already known in this corner of the industry.

But, most of the people that have used my agency services have sites that were hit by HCU.

That means that I had to start thinking like someone who isn’t starting with a solid reputation. Which is why I’m trying to be everywhere.

The thing with getting those initial clients as an unknown brand though is that you need proof in the way of case studies that show you can deliver results.

And doing these for free is often the easiest way to get them.

When I branched out to ecommerce SEO, I did free SEO for people that I know with ecomm sites and I started my own ecomm sites as well. These are the case studies that I send out.

But one thing you have to learn fast is the type of client you want and the type you want to stay away from. After a while, you get a feel for this and can immediately tell someone that you can’t help them.

For me, it’s people who want discounts or complain about pricing, people who want to treat me as their employee when I’m not, and people who think they know SEO ← these ones are the worst cause they’ve read a Neil Patel blog and are convinced they know more than me. In fact, they often mention Neil Patel. 😂

And, of course, the client who wants you to know how important they are. Earlier this year I had someone who wanted to hire Growth Cupid and he wrote me this novel-esque email mostly about what a big deal he is.

I find people like this are notoriously difficult to work with and just overall a nightmare client, so I immediately declined. Dude wrote me back an equally as long email again telling me why I should work with him cause he’s so important.

lol. I’d rather have to get a job bagging groceries than deal with asswipes like that.

Coming up…

Upcoming topics: more tips and ideas on Etsy and KDP, how it’s going with my chatGPT fiction ebook and the AI music thingie, and growing an ecomm site.

If you have a topic you want covered just reply and let me know.

Stay awesome,

P.S. If you’re looking for high level discussions or tips on things like local SEO and Rank & Rent, I highly recommend Jacky Chou’s Advise community. I’ve been in it for several months and there’s tons of value in it, including a SOP for local SEO.
