thoughts on Woocommerce vs Shopify

In partnership with

Iā€™ve talked in the past about how Iā€™m doing ecomm sites - real ones and fake ones (to fool Google).

But I recently got a question from someone wanting to do a real ecomm site that I want to answer here.

The question? Should I go with Shopify or Woocommerce?

More on that in a moment.

Both Have Their Problems & Benefits

As someone actively working on real ecommerce sites on both Shopify and Woocommerce, I have to tell you that I have my frustrations with both.

Letā€™s start with a choice based on budget.

If youā€™re on a budget, then hands-down Woocommerce is the best choice for you.

It doesnā€™t cost you anything - you just need a Wordpress site to run it on.

Though Shopify does have that $5/month Starter plan, you canā€™t grow a brand with that. I use it to embed products for sale on WordPress sites where I only want a couple of products.

So that means your cheapest option is that $39/month plan.

If budget is no concern, then I think youā€™ll agree that the industry standard is Shopify.

Having a Shopify site is a lot like a WordPress site where you pay for premium themes and plugins. Their native blog and breadcrumbs are shit, but you can make it work.

Shopify sites look good. And shoppers are used to seeing them.

Woocommerce is great because when youā€™re already used to WordPress you can create some stand-out designs while working with familiar plugins.

And sometimes you want something simple and donā€™t really need Shopify.

Woo also sells plugins, which I think they call extensions? I canā€™t remember and I literally bought one last week.

Overall I find Woocommerce sites to be a bit sluggish - even with amazing hosting.

Like Shopify, who also sells plugins, the stuff you can buy from the Woo Marketplace is kind of all over the place in terms of quality.

Both have shit support. You first have to go through a useless AI chatbot and often just not get the support you need. If you do get the support you need, it will take far too long. This is the experience Iā€™ve had with both.

If you have an ecomm site that is a bit more complicated, like say needing to add in some custom fields because youā€™re doing product customization, then do yourself a favor and donā€™t use Woocommerce.

I have spent almost two full months now trying my damnedest to make it work with Woocommerce because I havenā€™t seen any Shopify themes that match what I can do in WordPressā€¦and Iā€™m about ready to give up and re-do the whole damn site in Shopify.

Real talk - this can be the reality of your ecommerce experience.

Since the first month of Shopify is only $1.00, you may want to give it a try first.
