Selling Links Has Always Been Easy Money

For as long as I’ve been doing SEO, one thing has remained constant.

Well, probably more than one thing. But we’re talking about a specific one thing right now.

You can make a fuckload of money selling links.

That got me thinking recently.

I wonder if you could create a collection of local sites in major cities, build up the DR a bit, and then sell links on them to local SEO agencies.

And let’s level this up for even more cash…

They’re all lead gen sites, aka rank & rent sites, so you’re also profiting by selling leads.

The problem is the upfront expenses.

For a single site you’ve got:

• domain

• hosting

• content

• backlinks to boost DR

and you can’t just put them all on the same hosting cause smart agencies will notice. Sure, you can put some on different free Cloudflare accounts - but they can’t all be free Cloudflare.

So, let’s do some quick math (*remember how my day has gone and forgive me for any math errors):

30 cities x 10 domains in each city = 300 domains ($300/yr)

Split out the 30 cities 10 domains each hosting like =

• eight $100/yr hosting packages

• two cloudflare accounts

= $800/yr

Content = use Cuppa = maybe $25/year if you sell a ton of guest posts?

Backlinks to raise DR/DA of 300 sites?

• use free links where you can (just search Twitter for “sneaky backlinks”)

• trade links where you can

• don’t pay for any links until you’re profitable

So, if we don’t pay for any links until profitable, we’re looking at:

• $300/yr for domains

• $800/yr for hosting

• $25/yr for content

• $0/yr for links to boost DR (hopefully)

That’s under $1200/yr…assuming you can get the DRs up to at least 20 without needing to pay for anything.

So, the thing with local SEO is that often budgets are low. That means you need to price these high enough to make it worth your while but cheap enough agencies can white label it.

I think the lowest I’d go is $50/per link for either a 5-pack or 10-pack of links.

That would mean the purchase price would be $250 or $500.

You only gotta sell five for the 5-link packs a year to breakeven on raw costs.

The downside?

A fuckload of work and a fuckload of upkeep. Back when I had a PBN of a similar size it was a true nightmare.

Profits could be insane though if you have the systems and team to make it work.

I should really revisit this when my brain is clearer. What am I missing here for this to be an amazing idea?
