Starting a niche newsletter is a lot like starting a niche site.

You need to find a niche that has a decent sized audience.

And you gotta be able to make money from that audience.

When you drill down like that, it’s pretty simples huh?

Niche Newsletter Idea #2

The niche I’ve chosen today is Astronomy/Space.

Yeah, I know that’s pretty vague. But if you know anything about this niche from doing niche sites, then you already know that there’s a good audience out there.

And they aren’t afraid of spending money.

I do think you’d do best by niching down within this niche. Something like:

• stargazing weekly (news, events info, travel affiliate stuff for travel to see the star events, etc)

• space facts

• astronomy for hobbyists

• astronomy for seniors

• universe explorer (everything from moon phases to space discoveries to stargazing events)

• night sky photography

• and probably more that I’m not thinking of now!

With multiple sub-niche options, my monetization ideas may not work for all of those.

So, how do you monetize?

Ads to start while you build out your own products. (or maybe don’t use Beehiiv and go for the 10,000 free subs Newsletter Plan at Kit - might be the better option here) Affiliate links when relevant. (hello big telescope commissions!)

Start a YouTube channel that focuses on the same topics. Promote affiliate links in the description.

Things to level up to:

• monetized YouTube

• private membership

• courses/other info products

• white label physical products (those projector thingies that put the stars on your wall/ceiling, etc)

• POD merch - tshirts, hats, star photos (NASA photos are public domain)

• events (meteor watching parties, live night sky photography event, etc)

I also think this niche is perfect for an accompanying website. Especially with the goal of selling products. Honestly, I’d likely launch as a Woocommerce store selling POD stuff right from the start.

Then you can link to the merch in the newsletter from the very first issue. Yeah, definitely skip Beehiiv and use the free Kit newsletter plan to save money. You want the audience clicking on your own stuff.

I’m sure there’s a lot more here.

Thinking more on this niche, I know there are magazine in this niche, so I’d pop to Barnes & Noble, Waterfords, or whatever your local big bookstore chain store is called and check out those ‘zines.

See what kind of topics they cover. See what kinds of brands are buying ads in them and what they are selling. Use the info to adjust your own approach.

Anyways, I think you could do well with this. And since this is a high-ticket niche, I think you can earn more with fewer subs than in most niches.
