Picking A Genre For Your KDP Book Empire

If you’re new to publishing ebooks, it’s easy to make the mistake of looking up the most popular genre and trying to publish in it.

But that’s not the best strategy and not how I do it.

The best place to start is Amazon, more specifically their best sellers list.

Side note: if you’re pairing this with an existing website, then you obviously already have a genre.

So, here is where you find the main best sellers homepage - but what we want is the ebook best sellers which is what’s selling in the Kindle Store and that is located here.

Most people will want to start here though, with the best selling eBooks and you should see a list of genres on the left side of your screen (at least that’s where it is on desktop).

I recommend just clicking around the categories that you think you could write something for - I’m assuming with chatGPT or another AI writer. And you’re looking for the books that seem to be indie authors and not big name authors.

Here’s one that is not indie, though it could be an indie author with a publishing company. But with this one you’ll see it listed on several cookbooks.

And here’s one that is definitely an indie author -

Also, you can often tell an indie book by it’s terrible cover compared to the other books in this genre.

Anyways, we want to see evidence of indie books ranking in the top 100 PAID for their genre.

For the book in the screenshot above, this is something that would look very promising. Though it’s possible that this guy has a big social following that could get him on the charts, so I’d investigate that before choosing this genre.

The truth is that cookbooks is one of easier genres - especially if you have a cooking site already.

Hopefully this quick guide is good enough to get you started.

I do have a bit more to say on this, but it will have to wait until my next email, otherwise this would be a novel itself.
