and a look at the newsletter model as a side hustle

In partnership with

Hey there!

Shout out to the people who voted in the poll last time to let me know if you want to hear more about side hustles (that could be your main hustle).

The ā€œYesā€ votes won with 83.33% of the vote.

So, while Iā€™ll still be talking about sites and what Iā€™m doing, Iā€™ll also talk more about the other stuff Iā€™m doing/have done.

Also, youā€™ll notice that youā€™re getting this a day earlier than usual - thatā€™s due to tomorrow being a holiday and me planning on doing nothing.

Quick note that Iā€™ve got another sponsor today. So, give ā€˜em a click to check out their offer and get entered to win ALL the ads earnings for the month.

Facebook and Pinterest Alternative Traffic Project Update

Page likes have just crossed 9,500 yesterday, which means that Iā€™m getting really close to turning off the Likes ad campaign (once it reaches 10K).

I considered running it for longer just to gather more likes, but changed my mind.

Why? Because this niche isnā€™t really one that Iā€™m crazy about and Iā€™m getting much better results for this site with Pinterest.

For my Facebook post scheduling, Iā€™m using Post Planner for quick and easy scheduling and I love it.

A few weeks ago I scaled up from 10 daily posts to 17 per day. Why 17? No idea, thatā€™s just how I filled it out.

Iā€™ve seen pages in this niche (gardening) do multiple posts per hour and no way am I into that.

For those curious about the costs, my likes are still coming it at $0.04, which means most of my likes are going to have cost that amount. The first ad I ran was higher, which was why I scrapped it.

Seems the key right now for super cheap likes is using AI images. Tested this with another page and thatā€™s what my results are showing.

If you recall, this page is in the Facebook bonus program and itā€™s been underwhelming.

I think thatā€™s likely due to my focus on trying to get clicks out to my site instead of focusing on engagement.

This week Iā€™ve been doing some engagement tests based on what someone told me to try and I can see that itā€™s working. But more on that later.

As for Pinterest, Iā€™m still neglecting scheduling new pins but with the way Pinterest works my site is still seeing an increase in clicks from Pinterest.

The few pins that have been published were all for new content that I had the Growth Cupid team create.

That social-first content the Growth Cupid team has been creating for this site is showing up in my ā€œTop Pinsā€ section after less than a month, which is awesome.

Loving how this is looking and canā€™t wait to see how it growsā€¦though I am concerned about the seasonality of this niche.

Niche Newsletter Possibilities

If youā€™re not new here, then you know my main focus right now is newsletters - I have a local newsletter and Iā€™m working on niche newsletters to send traffic to my portfolio of sites.

But, like a local newsletter, you donā€™t even need a website to make some coin with niche newsletters.

Best part? You can get started for free since both Beehiiv and ConvertKit have free tiers. Though I prefer Beehiiv, ConvertKitā€™s free plan gives you a lot more subscribers (2,500 vs 10,000).

I know, I know. Many of you were burned by the Newsletter Guyā€™s course, but hear me out cause Iā€™m not selling you anything. (except affiliate links?)

Iā€™m not going to tell you to start a newsletter so that you can send them to your Mediavine or Raptive site to earn ads money.

But I am going to tell you that you gotta think about monetization BEFORE starting a newsletter AND it needs to be multiple streams.

Letā€™s say you start a travel newsletter, hereā€™s some monetization ideas:

  • send them to your ad-monetized website (I know, but it is one stream)

  • sell sponsor spots (Beehiiv has advertisers who may pay)

  • other ads in newsletter (you sell or ConvertKit is supposed to roll this out)

  • offer paid (premium) version of newsletter (Beehiiv makes this pretty easy)

  • offer consulting (help people plan a trip, etc)

  • sell a tour that you lead (i.e. join me in Tuscany where Iā€™ll show youā€¦)

  • sell merch (maybe posters of photos you took traveling)

  • sell digital products (ebook travel guides, itineraries, etc - likely easier with ConvertKit unless you sell via ThriveCart or something else)

  • affiliate links (promote travel affiliate programs)

There may be more options, but thatā€™s what Iā€™m coming up with right now.

Just pick a niche and brainstorm what you can sell and if it seems like lots of opportunity, then go for it!

And while you can start for free, itā€™s ideal if you can pay to acquire leads on Facebook.

Donā€™t let lack of experience or knowledge stop you either. These knuckleheads started out writing about small, unknown towns and re-branded after some people called them out for ā€œfindingā€ popular tourist spots.

As a side note, their rapid growth is not common and likely due to the ā€œthese 18-yr-olds launched a successful newsletterā€¦ā€ stories.

Their income, at the time, was all from Beehiiv Ads and Boosts, though I think it was mostly ads. In case you donā€™t know, Beehiiv Ads are the sponsor spots and Boosts are when you recommend other newsletters at signup for a sort of referral fee.

Anyways, fast forward and the travel newsletter kids started selling their newsletter growth services for money as soon as they reached 20K subs.

Of course, trading dollars for time like this is one of those things that isnā€™t always the best idea. So, aim for more scalable revenue streams.

You can also check out Duuce, which is a newsletter marketplace, to see how other newsletters are making money.

And remember, newsletters are selling for better multiples (and with more interest from buyers) than websites.

Next Timeā€¦

First, just a reminder that Iā€™m giving away the Beehiiv ads money this newsletter earns. Each newsletter where you click on the ad = one entry for the monies. And that has to be within 72 hours of the email hitting your inbox.

Not yet sure what weā€™ll talk about, so if you have a topic you want covered just reply and let me know.

Stay awesome,

Shawna

P.S. ConvertKit has a free newsletter plan now for up to 10,000 subscribers, while Beehiiv only gives you 2,500 subs for free. Something to think about if you wanna test the newsletter waters.
