⛈️ Pinterest Forecast

stormy skies ahead?

Hope you all enjoyed the guest authors I had while I was away visiting national parks and getting in some hiking.

And I hope their longer emails didn’t spoil ya too much 😅

While I was away, I did see an interesting article on Pinterest that I wanna talk about.

Where AI Slop Thrives?

I dunno if you’ve already seen it, but Futurism wrote an article about Pinterest and how it’s “being strangled by AI slop.”

It even links to Jesse Cunningham’s YouTube channel (score for him!).

When I first saw this article headline, I was like ‘well, guess that gravy train is about to end for people.’

Then, I read the article…

So, the article links to a 10-month old Reddit post of a user complaining about AI and then goes on to talk about “spammers” like Jesse and how Pinterest isn’t usable for the normies these days due to AI.

What I found really interesting from this article is that they reached out to Pinterest and got quotes.

Pinterest doesn’t think they have an AI images problem on the platform. And they went on to say "Impressions on generative AI content make up a small percentage of the total impressions on Pinterest.”

I’m not sure that I believe that, but I guess maybe there’s not gonna be a crackdown on on AI images on the platform?

Pinterest did mention that they’re “working on tools to label AI-generated or AI-altered content.” Though I’m not sure that’ll matter much to users.

And for the ones that it does matter, well I think you’ll have to make sure your images don’t get labeled as AI.

Another interesting thing I discovered is that currently on the Pinterest subreddit there are more recent complaints on how ad-heavy the site is…which is why I noted above that the Reddit post linked to from the article is 10 months old.

And, just like in that recipe bloggers Facebook group I got kicked out of, there’s people on Reddit trying to get AI accounts banned from the platform. They’re in an appropriately titled subreddit - PinterestSpamPolice 🤡
