🤡 When The Whole Story Is Missing

Since I’ve been doing the local newsletter thing for almost a year now, I follow a lot of people online in this space.

I also follow a lot people who just talk about newsletters in general.

And there’s one guy in particular that I’ve followed for a while who seems to have crazy success.

I’ve also noticed his name on the leaderboard for Beehiiv affiliates, so he seems to do really well both with newsletters and promoting them.

Or so I thought.

Smoke and Mirrors

So this guy, like I said, I’ve been following him for a while for general newsletter stuff.

Not all that long ago he became a member of the private newsletter group that I’m in and I noticed that he was interested in local newsletters.

I haven’t had time to check back in that group in a while but I noticed that he tweeted this today -

Obviously we got some engagement baiting going on here, but the tweet does include a screenshot of the subscribers.

At first, my thought was damn, why do I keep struggling with my local newsletter?

Then I thought, hrm, wonder how much of that revenue is profit? Cause I assume he ran a Facebook leads campaign to get subs.

Well, the comments tell the whole story.

That is $15K in revenue and $14K in subscriber acquisition costs.

And my guess is that the roughly $1K is in profit from Beehiiv ads and boosts earnings cause this guy has tweeted a lot in the past about using them for monetization.

So be careful comparing your success to others without the whole picture.
