๐Ÿ’ป Working Or No?

thoughts on hustle culture + my holiday plans

In partnership with

For many, many years now Iโ€™ve always taken the last couple of weeks of December off though around the 3rd of January.

This year though, I have some Growth Cupid client deliverables due on the 30th.

Despite that, Iโ€™m still in holiday mode, as evidenced by todayโ€™s cosmo before lunch, cause holidays means you can treat your drinking/eating like youโ€™re at the airport right?

Anyways, it seems like my normal last two weeks of the year off is not really the norm for most people doing their own online thing.

More on that in a moment.

But first, Iโ€™ve got TWO sponsors today. One here, and one below. So, check โ€˜em out!

Hustle Culture

If you spend any time on social media these days, or honestly in recent years, then you likely know a little something about hustle culture.

Thereโ€™s the โ€˜go hard all the time no matter whatโ€™ side, which seems to mostly be a bunch of incels with nothing else going on in their life so all they do is hustle. (okay, not 100% incels, but they seem to be the loudest online)

Thereโ€™s the โ€˜work-life balanceโ€™ side, which seems to be made of people with families or previous beast-mode peeps who burned out and learned a thing or two about the toll going hard 24/7 takes on you.

And I think thereโ€™s also some people who are kinda in the middle of that Venn diagram who go hard some of the time, but also are comfortable taking time off to unwind.

Honestly, I think at different stages in my life Iโ€™ve been in all three groups, except Iโ€™ve been in the same relationship since I was 19 so Iโ€™ve always had someone else to think about.

When youโ€™re young and trying to make your mark, I think itโ€™s natural to wanna go hard all the time.

Sometimes it takes that kind of grind mindset to really break through and see some success.

But at the same time, it IS toxic because it leads to burnout and all sorts of health issues if youโ€™ve done it too long.

I also know that when I get excited about a new project that I really wanna go beast mode at it, so I have to stop myself.

Honestly, I think in my almost 20 years of making money online (yes, Iโ€™m practically ancient in this industry), the times that I have made the most money have been when I wasnโ€™t grinding as hard.

Of course, it may have been the prior beast mode periods that set me up for that success.

I think for me, though, being right in the middle is where Iโ€™m most comfortable. Beast mode for some small time periods with long periods of amazing work-life balance.

So, while I will be doing a little work here at the end of the year, Iโ€™m mostly in chill mode until after the new year.

One of my brothers is coming into town for Christmas tomorrow and will be here a week. Thatโ€™s a full week of zero work cause heโ€™ll be sleeping in the room I use as my office.

And Iโ€™m cool with that. Iโ€™m even looking forward to it. Though Iโ€™ll still be writing these emails.

I hope you, too, can resist the urge to stay in beast mode during the holidays.
