🧹 About That Local Cleaning Business

I didn't think this one through

In partnership with

Three weeks ago I announced that I was starting a local cleaning business after seeing so many side hustle bros do it.

And I was going to promote it in my local newsletter.

I did both of those things. And I have some thoughts.

More on that in a moment.

But first, I’ve got TWO sponsors today. One here, and one below. So, check ‘em out for a chance at some monies!

Spot Your Customers Instantly

Right now, you just see a list of random email addresses making orders. But I’ve got a database with 5+ million influencers in it. I take your list of customers and show you which ones have an engaged audience. On average? 75 influencers per 5,000 shoppers. That’s free, organic marketing sitting right under your nose. I Forgot Something

Having lived in Vegas for so long, and having complained about it in regards to my local newsletter, people here are cheap.

You can also go out here in the middle of the day on any weekday and wonder if any of the local population has jobs.

Translation: based on my experience there are a lot of lazy peeps in Vegas. And yes, they’re also cheap.

I forgot about that when I had the great idea for a remote cleaning business, but locally.

I’m in a ton of local Facebook groups and that’s where I began to why this is such a bad idea.

There’s the woman offering whole-house cleaning for $80.

That’s right. Just a single $80 flat fee for the entire house - regardless of size.

No, she’s not licensed and insured, but loads of people in the Facebook comments wanting to hire her (cause people here are cheap).

But we’re a niched down a cleaning service - just move-out and move-in cleans. The ones that people are used to paying a lot for.

I should tell you that entry-level housekeeping positions at all the casinos on The Strip start at over $20/hr. (It’s obscene that these are some of the highest paying jobs in the city - I’ve seen job listings for accountants that pay less per hour! and you need a degree and certification for that)

When you live in a city where the locals don’t want to pay the going rates for a clean, yet the cleaners expect more than $20/hr, it’s difficult to find your market fit.

Also, some people consider move-out/in cleans to be deep cleans, and we recently got this quote request -

Disinfection? what the actual fuck happened in this house?

They need pest control? Crime scene clean-up? wtf?

This is when I remembered saying that the “worst case scenario is that I’ll have to clean a house and that’s cool cause I’m not afraid of hard work.”

Shit. I am afraid of a house that needs disinfection.

And why are there so many bathrooms?

So, here’s the deal - I still think remote cleaning businesses are a good model. I still think owning a local business + a local newsletter is a match made in heaven.

But I also think that I have no intention of possibly having to clean a house that needs disinfected. So I’m gonna step away from this local cleaning business idea.

Maybe just use it to capture and sell leads. Or maybe circle back to this idea when I forget about the disinfection quote request.

Like I’ve said - I’m not afraid of hard work but keep me the hell away from some crime scene clean-up house.

Got any other local business ideas I should consider? Retail/commercial space here isn’t cheap, so got be something that doesn’t require that.
