After yesterdayโs email on Three Ships being everywhere, I discovered that I actually know someone who used to work there.
After leaving, this person was required to sign a NDA, so I canโt share anything that will expose who this is. But I learned some interesting stuff.

The most surprising thing that I learned from this person is what ACTUALLY brings in most of the revenue from these partnerships/parasite SEO plays.

So, like I said yesterday, Iโve been aware of Three Ships for a while cause they used to buy up a lot of niche sites.
With that in mind, I just assumed their primary revenue stream was affiliate monies.
It is not.
Lead gen is where the real money is coming from for them.
They are selling leads for hundreds of dollars because they use Boberdoo, where companies bid on the leads, which drives the price/revenue up.
Some of these leads they sell are going for more than $700โฆ.for a single lead ๐คฏ
Yโall, I been in the wrong business. clearly
And you wonโt believe how quickly Three Ships scales revenue.
For their USA Today Homefront partnership, they went from launch ($0 revenue) to $400,000 revenue in just three months.
THREE MONTHS! ๐คฏ
Insane, right?
Iโm told that they never do a pay-for-play thing where โspotsโ are sold on the pages/articles, but when revenue for a page/article is not inline with expectations, they will shuffle things so the most profitable offers for them are higher up the page.
Donโt blame them for that one bit. Theyโre no different from us small players when it comes to that.
This is also a VERY corporate office though where it takes multiple approvals for their content/SEO teams to get anything approved and pushed to production.
I think if they were as scrappy as us solo site owners/SEOs and didnโt have that corporate bottleneck, then they would see higher revenues than $400,000/month within three months since they clearly have good teams and SOPs to roll things out.
At the end of the day, if solo site owners and SEOs had the kind of capital and teams as Three Ships and the Forbes Advisor people, then I think the scrappy solo people would crush them.
But the reality is that itโs difficult to compete when theyโre partnering with brands that are DR80+ and have backlink profiles that would cost an insane amount to replicate.
And thatโs the Google reality weโve been left with.
Cause even with all the publicity these partnerships are getting right now, I suspect what will happen is a manual penalty just for those sections of the sites and the companies like Three Ships will just move on to the next big authority sites on their list that they can partner with and do it all over again.
