lots of options to niche down here

In partnership with

This is the third installment where I give you an idea for a niche newsletter.

And then I give you some monetization ideas.

You can read idea #2 here and idea #1 here.

But what’s different about this idea is that I’m actually getting ready to make a move with this one.

Intrigued?

Before we jump in, I’ve got one sponsor today.…

Niche Newsletter Idea #3

The niche I’ve chosen today is Recipes.

Yeah, that’s a big ole broad one. The secret here, at least I think so, is that you gotta niche down.

There’s a paid newsletter I saw focused on Southern recipes (the southern part of the US, for those of you not American). I grew up in the South, so those recipes are all just lots of butter and sugar.

But anyways, I don’t think you’ll see success with a broad recipes newsletter.

I think you either niche down or hyper niche down.

Let’s start with hyper niche down - here’s what I’m thinking.

Let’s say you want to focus on Japanese food recipes. That would be niched down, but you can hyper niche down by also making this a language learning thing.

Say, for every recipe you get to learn one Japanese word - ideally an ingredient. It stands to reason that people interested in Japanese food likely don’t already know Japanese.

I know this one will work because one of my brothers would absolutely love this. Especially if it had a podcast component, which could focus more on the language learning or maybe info about the recipe and where in Japan you get that food, it’s history in the country, etc.

So yeah, for just regular niching down, pick something that you think people will want recipes for weekly.

  • vegan recipes

  • ‘learn to cook’ recipes

  • dessert recipes

  • using natural sweeteners recipes

  • mocktails

  • low-histamine recipes

  • heart healthy recipes

  • air fryer recipes

  • sheet pan recipes

  • using fresh herbs recipes

  • cooking with wine recipes

  • cooking with rum recipes

  • high protein recipes

  • carb-free recipes

  • French recipes

The options here really are limitless.

You could use AI for the recipes and photos, but I do think that will come back to bite ya as soon as one of those recipes goes awry and you lose a bunch of subscribers.

For longevity, I think you gotta put in the work here. Just go with a weekly email to ease the workload.

So, how do you monetize?

I’ve got a few ideas -

  • affiliate links to buy the ingredients

  • display ads (on the website you have to go with it)

  • Beehiiv ads (they have some decent-ish food advertisers)

  • products - create your own or white label

  • recipe books on Amazon (ebook + print books)

  • if you can do a podcast like I mentioned above, get sponsors

  • in-person cooking workshops? (French recipes newsletter = book this guided food tour/live workshops in Provence)

  • digital cooking workshops (you do or pay someone for. Record once, sell forever)

  • premium newsletter version where they get more issues

  • Facebook bonus program (recipe pages do amazing)

  • YouTube channel making the recipes or just for the podcast (get display ads and eventually sponsors)

  • probably other stuff I can’t think of

I should note to you that I’ve NEVER really done the whole recipe site thing. I have one…it just only has 5 recipes on it before I stopped.

So, I’m essentially starting fresh with my own niched down recipes newsletter idea.

What I’m doing is sitting down to come up with 100 recipe ideas that I can send out. Those will also form the foundation of the YouTube channel.

I’ll be doing weekly sends. I may do the podcast, not sure yet cause of the time commitment.

Once I actually get started, I’ll be sharing more about it.

Thoughts on this idea?
